A Comedy of Terrors: A Flavia Albia Novel (Flavia Albia Series Book 9) Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from carmen -- Davis is the best of writers… : I’ve been following Lindsey Davis‘s books for over a decade. From the Silver Pigs, starring Falco, to this ninth book starring his adopted daughter Albia. And it has been my pleasure to collect every one. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Eric Gorman -- Another good Flavia novel : This is not the best of the Albia Flavia mystery novels but it is very nice to revisit old friends. I enjoy the character of Flavia even more than her dear old dad Falco. Though I feel a touch disloyal for saying so. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from JRAlpine -- There's a parrot! : If not the best book in Lindsey Davis’s lively Flavia Albia series, “A Comedy of Terrors” is an ingeniously plotted and mostly entertaining tale set in Domitian’s Rome during Saturnalia, a riotous winter festival. During this unhinged time, both private investigator Flavia Albia and her magistrate husband Tiberius find themselves drawn into cases that grow more peculiar, complicated, and interconnected right to the end. Even streetwise Albia makes mistakes. There’s lots of family business too, some of it occasionally tedious. But Saturnalia adds color (and silliness) to a story with a most satisfying conclusion. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from D. Frey -- Sinking Slowly : These Flavia Alba books become more and more dull with needlessly over complicated plots. Ms. Davis Needs to get Flavia out of Rome, which was part of the great appeal of the Falco books. Nobody gives a damn about the different hills of Rome or, quite frankly, Ms. Albia’s domesticecarrangements. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jacqueline D. Johnson -- You can never go wrong : With a Lindsey Davis book. Student of Roman history, mystery fan, lover of the English language or just a passer by. Give yourself a treat. Flavia Alba and her husband and household are a great continuation of the Marco Didius Falco tradition! ( Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Helen Chappell -- Flavia! : A new Lindsey Davis is always a cause for celebration and comedy of Terrors does not disappoint. The cast of ancient Roman characters, Davis’s sense of both plot and tongue in cheek humor has never been better. Can’t wait for the next one! ( Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sue in Corrales -- The Roman Matron We Aspire To Be : Flavia Alba is married, again, and shows her mettle, her cynical wit in solving yet another mysterious crime. Incinerated children and their parents are revenged, a sheep named Sheep is murdered and then used to punish the man who orders the killing. Slaves overturn households on Saturnalia, the sun descends in the Coliseum and relights itself while the doughty vigiles battle flames. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lorita P -- Party Time : Saturnalia brings the topsy turvy rituals wherein slaves rule and jokes are played on everyone. Albia finds the answers that are needed as she takes on a new role. Family counts for everything. And Falco and Helena and Petro play a part as well. Take a walk on the wild side in this satisfying Roman adventure. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from L Weale -- Flavia Albia and Tiberius Manlius Faustus investigate unhappy families and mouldy nuts : Set over Saturnalia and just before Tiberius Manlius Faustus comes to the end of his responsibilities as a Plebian Aedile and soon after Faustus's has brought two of his dead sister's children to live with them. Albia has no work and and Faustus and Vigiles Investigator Morellus are looking into the scandal of mouldy nuts being sold to celebrate Saturnalia. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 2021 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Margarita -- Disappointing : There really didn’t seem to be much story to this story. I’ve generally found the Albia stories to be less gripping than the Falco books. They started off well enough but each ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 4, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Not her best : Readable, but not one of her page turners. It was sluggish in parts. It also reminded me of American Christmas films where seasonal activities such as shopping, cutting a tree and decorating it, baking goodies, wrapping gifts and saving Santa all happen in daylight hours on Christmas Eve. Even in Rome at Saturnalia time didn’t stretch long enough to do all Flavia Albia fitted in before evening! And it is somehow out of character that she would put up with the ridiculous antics of some of her staff without blowing a fuse and having a few sharp words. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 23, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from GreyFod -- Live it : One doesn't read Lindsey Davis's Roman novels, one lives in them. Flavia is a lovely lady and great sleuth and I would like to pop into the pub with Tiberius. Roman history has fascinated me for a long time, I have some knowledge, I fit into these stories, or these stories fit my knowledge and views, they are so darned comfortable. They can be scary and spooky and involve murders, and they are great stories. Picking up a Lindsey Davis Roman story is like putting on one's best, most comfortable coat. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Clemens A. Schoonderwoert -- A Delightful But Somewhat Predictable Roman Mystery! : ** You may read this as 4 - 4.5 STARS!** ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 15, 2021 )
